Cardinals acquire Paul Goldschmidt from Diamondbacks

The St. Louis Cardinals are the top runner to land the first baseman.

The trade: St. Louis Cardinals acquire 1B Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks for right-handed starting pitcher Luke Weaver, C Carson Kelly, infielder Andy Young and a Round B compensation pick in the 2019 draft.

A six-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove victor at 31, Goldschmidt was among the top players available in the trade market.

Goldschmidt is slated to earn $14.5 next season, as well as a $1 million bonus for the trade. The quiet slugger was selected by Arizona in the eighth round of the 2009 draft and made his major league debut in 2011.

In 2018, Goldschmidt hit.290 with 83 RBI and 33 home runs.

The Cardinals first must acquire Goldschmidt, then convince him over time to stick with the team before we can gauge the merits of their risky pursuit.

"Certainly this is a bittersweet decision on our part", Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said on a conference call. After going 7-2 with a 3.88 ERA, Weaver followed that up with a record of 7-11 and an ERA of 4.95.

Although the Diamondbacks are entering rebuilding mode, it's unlikely they'll allow Goldschmidt, 31, to leave for the Cardinals, Astros or any other team for less than market value.
