Downing Street denies existence of secret plot for a second Brexit referendum

British PM Theresa May said on Monday'another vote on EU membership would leave the UK'no further forward

As opposition to Theresa May's Brexit deal increases by the day, a growing number of ministers around the Cabinet table are coming to the same conclusion: a second referendum may now be required.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has accused one of her predecessors, Tony Blair, of "undermining" the Brexit negotiations by calling for a second referendum.

On May's deal being voted on by MPs in mid-January: "That is unacceptable".

A Labour source has indicated the motion would be targeted at Mrs May personally, rather than the Government.

May told lawmakers on Monday that debate on the deal would resume the week of January 7, when Parliament comes back after its Christmas break.

In the Commons, the Prime Minister will all but rule out holding a second vote while she remains in charge.

"We can't just have continuing uncertainty and I think Parliament should be invited to say what it would agree with", Business Secretary Greg Clark told the BBC.

The UK government is preparing to spend up to £2bn on Brexit measures in the coming weeks as it looks increasingly likely that Britain will crash out of the European Union without a deal on future trading arrangements.

May's spokesman, James Slack, said Monday that the government had "no plans" to hold such an indicative vote.

"Parliament has a democratic duty to deliver what the British people voted for".

She said: "Labour's position right now is it won't back a second European Union referendum until it has tried and failed to trigger a general election, but if it won't try to trigger a general election then we're in this catch-22 position".

However Mr Corbyn said the Prime Minister had led the country into a "national crisis".

But she added: "After that we need to find out where the will of Parliament is, where the majority of MPs will vote in Parliament and nothing should be off the table, we should consider all options".

If anything, her very specific denial should make us realise that a People's Vote has never been closer.

On Labour's alternative: "There is no better deal at the moment".

It emerged on Sunday that Mrs May's de facto deputy, David Lidington, held a meeting with Labour MPs last week to hear their arguments for another public vote.

But Downing Street insisted there are "no plans" to hold such a vote, and it is understood Mrs May rejected the prospect during a phone call with senior colleagues last week.

"Until the Commons has had its view on Theresa May's deal, she's going to limp on, pretending that this can get through".

May added: "Avoiding no deal is only possible if we can reach an agreement or if we abandon Brexit entirely".

And the chief spokesperson for the European commission, which has been leading negotiations, confirmed on Monday that "no further meetings with the United Kingdom are foreseen".
