Facebook wielded user data to reward, punish rivals, emails show

Mark Zuckerberg chief executive officer and founder of Facebook Inc. listens during the Viva Technology conference in Paris France on Thursday

In a summary of key issues pertaining to the documents, the committee says Facebook "whitelisted" or gave preferential access to certain companies, such as Airbnb and Netflix, even after the tech giant announced changes in 2015 to end access to a user's "friends". Damien Geradin, a Brussels-based lawyer at Euclid Law, said the refusal of access to Vine data could be seen as a "potential refusal to deal" with rivals, "but you would need to show that Facebook" is essential to users and it is "not clear it is".

Facebook also took an "aggressive" position when dealing with rival apps, Collins said, by denying them access to data that meant that businesses would fail.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg makes the keynote address at F8, Facebook's developer conference in San Jose, California, May 1, 2018.

Collins notes that a recurring theme in the 250-page cache of documents is that Facebook pushed the "idea of linking access to friends data to the financial value of the developers' relationship with Facebook".

"We stand by the platform changes we made in 2015 to stop a person from sharing their friends' data with developers", said a spokeswoman.

"Sometimes the best way to enable people to share something is to have a developer build a special objective app or network for that type of content and to make that app social by having Facebook plug into it", Zuckerberg wrote in 2012.

Facebook wants the laptop to be evaluated to determine what happened in the United Kingdom, to what extent the court order was breached, and how much of its confidential information has been divulged to the committee.

"As we've said many times, the documents Six4Three gathered for their baseless case are only part of the story and are presented in a way that is very misleading without additional context", a spokesperson wrote. "In some situations, when necessary, we allowed developers to access a list of the users' friends", the company said.

"Like any business, we had many internal conversations about the various ways we could build a sustainable business model for our platform". "We've never sold people's data". Do we just charge a rev share directly and let devs who use them get a credit against what they owe us?

In one email, dated January 23 2013, a Facebook engineer contacted Zuckerberg to say that rival Twitter Inc. had launched its Vine video-sharing tool, which users could connect to Facebook to find their friends there. The good news about full reciprocity [where apps let users share their activity back to Facebook] is that for bigger social companies we might otherwise be anxious about, if they're enabling their users to push all of their social content back into Facebook then we're probably fine with them.
