'High-tech' robot on Russian TV was man in suit

"How did Russian scientists get the finished robot so quickly, without publishing any intermediate results?" they asked, and why is it shaped like it is a robot suit with a man inside it, rather than a hinged machine?

State-of-the-art robot was presented on December 11 at ProeKTOriya forum in Yaroslavl, Kremlin-run media, in particular, Rossiya 24 channel, reported.

A robot shown off on Russian TV stunned an audience of schoolchildren with abilities including dancing, walking, talking and solving maths problems.

The state TV company has since claimed that it never suggested Boris was a real robot.

Photos that emerged later showed the neckline of a person in a suit, revealing that the "robot" turned out to be a $3,800 "Alyosha the Robot" costume made by a company called Show Robots, according to the newspaper. Whilst the whole forum - aimed at younger people getting into robotics - looks pretty cool, the part that caught the eye of Russian Federation 24 was a freakishly human-like robot called Boris. But bloggers in Russian Federation soon began to raise questions about the robot called "Boris", The Guardian notes.

A similar robot costume to that shown at the fair.

Organizers are quoted as saying: "It's entirely possible one of these [students] could dedicate himself to robotics".

On the website of the company behind the robot, it is described as being able to create "an nearly complete illusion that you have a real robot".

The forum was mainly targeted at children and youths, though it has not been established if any of them thought the "robot" was real for even an instant.

Footage of the robot reportedly disappeared briefly from Russia-24's YouTube channel on Wednesday morning but it came back again a short while later.
