Huawei executive gets bail in case rattling China ties

China's Huawei CFO makes bail in Canada, Trump considers intervening

Meng, 46, faces USA accusations that she covered up her company's links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions, a Canadian prosecutor said on Friday, arguing against giving her bail while she awaits extradition to the United States. Chinese officials have expressed outrage over the arrest and observers have warned about the risk of retaliation.

While declining to confirm the detention of Michael Kovrig, ministry spokesman Lu Kang said the International Crisis Group, where Kovrig is a Hong-Kong-based analyst, was not registered in China and its activities in the country were illegal.

The Canadian authorities have agreed to release our CFO, Ms. Meng Wanzhou, on bail following her detainment on behalf of...

Donald Trump says he could intervene in the case of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou if it helps to avoid a further decline in U.S. relations with China.

It is not yet clear whether Kovrig's case is connected in any way to the diplomatic standoff between Canada and China over the arrest of a senior Chinese tech executive.

A former Canadian ambassador to Beijing, Guy Saint-Jacques, told AFP Kovrig's detention is likely related to Canada's arrest of Meng. Meng's family, which includes her husband and four kids, own two multimillion-dollar houses in Vancouver that she is willing to put up for bail.

Michael Kovrig, who previously worked as a diplomat in China and elsewhere, was taken into custody by the Beijing Bureau of Chinese State Security on Monday night during one of his regular visits to Beijing. She faces possible extradition to the U.S.

President Donald Trump says he is willing to intervene in the USA government's case against Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou if such a move would help in securing a trade deal with China.

"We're obviously anxious about whenever a Canadian is put in a situation that puts them at some risk or jeopardy, where there's no apparent or obvious cause or trigger for that", Goodale said.

The judge on Monday rolled the proceedings over to Tuesday because he wanted to hear more about who would take responsibility for Meng's actions if she were released.

Justice William Ehrcke at a court hearing in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Tuesday granted bail to Meng, subject to a guarantee of C$10 million ($7.5 million) and other conditions.

Meng Wanzhou, Huawei Technologies Co.

Huawei said in a statement it was confident that the courts would "reach a just conclusion" in the case and stressed that the company complies with all laws and sanctions. "But they have not called me yet", he said when asked if he has spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the case. The researcher is confident that Huawei is only the most recent name in the target list and that other Chinese firms would eventually also be targeted. SkyCom was used as a proxy to engage in business deals with sanctioned countries and dealt directly with Iranian telecom companies.
