Justice 'Recuperating' After Cancer Surgery, Released From Hospital

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Ginsburg underwent a pulmonary lobectomy on Friday at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NY, where she spent the long weekend before her discharge on Christmas day, the court said. Post-surgery, there was no evidence of any remaining disease.

"Justice Ginsburg was discharged from the hospital yesterday and is recuperating at home", Kathy Arberg, public information officer for the Supreme Court, said on Wednesday.

The court is slated to resume its work on January 7, 2019. Last month, she cracked three ribs in a fall at the court.

Justices on the highest court in the U.S. serve for life or until they retire.

"Today, you join more than 20 million current citizens born in other lands who chose, as you have, to make the United States of America their home", Ginsburg said. She previously fought pancreatic cancer and has had heart surgery.

Despite various health concerns, Ginsburg has never missed arguments.

"This is just luck" that the growths were found through those rib X-rays because accidentally discovered lung tumours tend to be early-stage when surgery works best, said Dr. Giuseppe Giaccone, an oncologist at Georgetown University's Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Ginsburg has recovered from previous medical issues. And there were already signs that her recovery was going smoothly. She was hospitalized after a bad reaction to medicine in 2009.

The liberal justice was appointed to the court by Bill Clinton in 1993.
