Iconic TV actress and movie director Penny Marshall has passed away at the age of 75.

Marshall starred as Laverne DeFazio, the Milwaukee brewery worker, alongside Cindy Williams in the hit ABC comedy Laverne & Shirley.

The success of Big made Marshall the first woman to direct a film that made more than $100 million U.S. at the domestic box office. She directed many stars including Geena Davis, Robert De Niro, Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, Madonna, Denzel Washington, Rosie O'Donnell, and Whitney Houston.

TMZ reports Marshall died of complications from diabetes. Her first was to her college sweetheart, Michael Henry, with whom she had a daughter, Tracy.

Marshall got her first stab at directing when she stepped into replace the original director.

After "Laverne & Shirley", Marshall went on to find even more success behind the camera, directing the Tom Hanks hit "Big" in 1988.

Carole Penny Marshall was born October 15, 1943, in the Bronx. She also was a regular in her brother Garry's films, appearing in 2011's New Year's Eve and narrating his last film, 2016's Mother's Day.

She said: 'He's a great guy.

"Penny Marshall was a sweet woman". The James L. Brooks praised her for making "films which celebrated humans" and for her guiding influence to young comedians and writers.

But Marshall's legacy will long outlast many of her male peers, and we're truly grateful for the films she gifted to us. Her family said plans for a "celebration of her life" will be announced at a later date. She was a divorced single mom in the 1960s before she made her way to Hollywood.
