MBS mingles with G20 leaders as Trump fuels summit tensions

Saudi prince in Argentina as G20 summit tensions brew

Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders from the BRICS group of leading emerging economies, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, all called for an opening of global trade and a strengthening of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

Left alone on the world stage, President Macri after US President Donald Trump walked off stage.

The Trump-Xi meeting was set to be the marquee event of Trump's whirlwind two-day trip to Argentina for the G20 summit after he canceled a sit-down with Russian President Vladimir Putin over mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine.

It's unlikely the two countries will reach a full-blown resolution in Buenos Aires; the issues that divide them are just too hard.

After initial plans for him to stay away from the summit, Trump's hardline trade adviser, Peter Navarro, was added to the U.S. delegation at the last minute and is expected to attend the meeting between Trump and Xi, a USA official and a source familiar with the situation told Reuters.

While the other 19 nations agreed to support the Paris agreement on fighting climate change, the United States reaffirmed its position to withdraw from that accord. One French source said European leaders were trying to forge a separate statement on climate change excluding the US.

He said cooperation with the USA would serve in the interest of "peace and prosperity".

Meanwhile, the US reaffirmed its intention to withdraw from the Paris climate accord as other members of the group repeated their commitment to implement the Paris deal, taking into account their national circumstances and relative capabilities.

A Chinese foreign ministry official in Buenos Aires said there were signs of increasing consensus ahead of the discussions, although differences remained, Reuters reported.

Asked about the European concerns, a US official said progress was being made on the joint statement and the White House was "optimistic" about the document as a whole.

The second session covered sustainable development and climate change, while the third session discussed infrastructure for development, energy and a sustainable food future.

Mr Faurie said the final communique does not require the signature of presidents. It also notes a recent United Nations report that warned damage from global warming will be much worse than previously feared, and expresses support for an upcoming United Nations climate meeting in Poland meant to nail down how countries will meet promises made in the Paris accord.

The dinner scheduled for Saturday evening has been cast as a key encounter that could help the two leaders ease the trade tensions, or it could end in stalemate.

Following the USMCA signing, and once Argentina's President Mauricio Macri has opened the first of the summit's two days, a mass protest is planned in central Buenos Aires on Friday afternoon. It cited tensions over Chinese technological development, a focus of USA concern.

Mnuchin's influence - cheered by investors - may be tempered by the presence of Peter Navarro, a noted China hawk who advises Trump on trade.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as the countries look for ways to ease an escalating trade war. European Council President Donald Tusk said the European Union would extend its economic sanctions on Moscow this month after Russian ships fired last week on Ukrainian vessels in the Sea of Azov, seizing the boats and sailors.

While Trump's meeting with Xi is all but certain to go ahead, the USA president on Thursday abruptly scrapped his planned talks with Putin, citing Russia's recent seizure of Ukrainian vessels.

Also expected to loom large amid dozens of bilateral meetings in Buenos Aires: the gruesome slaying of Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate and how the Saudi crown prince, who is alleged to have ordered the killing, is received by world leaders.

French President Emmanuel Macron says he pressed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to allow worldwide involvement in the investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

There are also questions about how to handle the awkward presence of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Macron said he would raise the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi with the crown prince on the sidelines of the summit.

Mr. Trump met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel earlier on Saturday.
