Nasdaq in bear market, first of the three major USA indexes

Dow Jones after market close

Investors fear a recession is coming, and barring huge gains during the upcoming holiday period, when trading is usually quiet, this will be the worst December for stocks since the 1930s.

The Dow Jones tumbled more than 400 points in a rough week as investors grew skittish following the Federal Reserve's decision to enact a rate hike as lawmakers work to avert a possible shutdown.

The S&P 500 fell 36 points, or 1.4 percent, to 2,471.

The S&P 500 is down 206.19 points, or 7.7 percent.

The index finished the day down 21.9 percent from its August 29 record closing high, exceeding the 20 percent decline considered the threshold for a bear market.

The S&P 500 fell 50 points, or 2.1 percent, to 2,416.

After nearly 10 years, Wall Street's rally looks like it's ending.

The Dow was down 1,655 points or 6.9 percent for the week, the largest weekly loss since October 2008.

Another miserable day on Wall Street knocked 464 points off the Dow Jones Industrial average, bringing its losses since Friday to more than 1,700 points.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped into a bear market, defined as a 20 percent decline from its recent highs, for the first time since the global financial crisis in 2008.

"We see slowing economic and earnings growth and a carousel of concerns", said Keith Lerner, chief market strategist at SunTrust, in a note to investors Friday.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 lost 2.8 percent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gave up 1 percent.

Some economists argue that the steep Wall Street sell-off does not reflect conditions in the wider economy, which grew at an annual pace of 3.4% in the most recent quarter. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell into a bear market and the S&P 500 was on the brink of one itself, down almost 18 percent from its record earlier this year.

The Nasdaq is down 570.40 points, or 8.3 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is down 209.51 points, or 13.6 percent.

The Russell 2000 is down 84.81 points, or 6 percent.

On Friday the price of US crude slipped 0.6 percent to $45.59 a barrel in NY. The bond market has been heading in the opposite direction these last few weeks, as increased investor interest in bonds has been driving prices up and therefore sending yields down. That sent the price of gold higher, and it gained 0.9 percent to $1,267.9 an ounce. Procter & Gamble lost 1.3 percent.
