Nathan Eovaldi agrees to US$68M, 4-year deal with Red Sox

He became a free agent after the World Series.

In 7 seasons for Nathan Eovaldi, he has dealt with; two Tommy John surgeries, three trades, being non-tendered, and missing all of the 2017 season.

It's not hard to find reason for caution with Nathan Eovaldi's new contract with the Boston Red Sox. The hard-throwing righty kept the NY bats at bay, allowing just one run over seven innings in a series-changing 17-1 win in Game 3 of the ALDS. He owns a 10-5 record with a 3.70 career ERA in 26 appearances.

Originally drafted by the Dodgers in 2008, Eovaldi also pitched for the Marlins before beginning his tour of the AL East with the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox. Manager Alex Cora credited Eovaldi's effort with being one of the catalysts that helped Boston win its fourth World Series title in 15 years. Eovaldi looks to slot alongside Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello, and Eduardo Rodriguez, to once again form a scary rotation and one of the tops in baseball. World Series MVP Steve Pearce has already re-signed; Game 5 victor David Price opted in to the last four years of the contract he signed before the 2016 season; the team exercised its option on ace Chris Sale.

The deal fills the 40-man roster and puts Boston at risk of exceeding the Competitive Balance Tax for the second straight year.

Craig Kimbrel, Ian Kinsler, Drew Pomeranz, Joe Kelly and Brandon Phillips are Boston's remaining free agents.

According to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand via Twitter Thursday, the team has reached a four-year, $67.5 M contract agreement with Eovaldi to keep him as a member of the World Series champions. Boston issued a qualifying offer to Kimbrel, one that guarantees the club draft pick compensation should the closer land elsewhere.
