O2 customers unable to get online

Ericsson says an expired software certificate was responsible for the outage that left tens of millions in the United Kingdom unable to call or text from their mobile phones on Thursday.

Customers have reported being unable to access the internet and other services across the network.

O2 has said a "full service" will be restored by Friday morning following a data outage, which affected millions of users.

The mobile network then followed their message up with: "Outage Update: One of our 3rd party suppliers has identified a software issue in their system".

Their technical teams are working on the issue as a "high priority" and updates will be given throughout the day.

An additional seven million customers of Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff, and Lycamobile, which O2 provides services for, are also impacted.

'We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry'.

With O2 United Kingdom and Softbank customers being thrown back to the 90s after a network outage, reports have emerged suggest Ericsson was the root cause.

"The faulty software that has caused these issues is being decommissioned and we apologize not only to our customers but also to their customers", Ekholm said.

He said: "I want to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to fix the issue with our network and say how sorry I am to everyone affected". According to two people directly involved, an issue relating to software in the systems provided by Ericsson has been identified.

The mobile network said it had set up an urgent investigation after customers reported being able to get online or use mobile date from the early hours of Thursday. They're now working hard to resolve the issue so we would imagine it won't be too long before its back up.
