President Trump meets with the leader of Argentina during G20 summit

China's President Xi Jinping waits for the start of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires Argentina Friday Nov. 30 2018

China said it remained hopeful of a deal and, after earlier indicating pessimism, Mr Trump said on Friday: "They want to and we'd like to".

The president believes "there is a good possibility that we can make a deal" and he "is open to it", Kudlow said later Tuesday.

But Trump told the Wall Street Journal on Monday that he would go ahead with a scheduled increase in punitive tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports if there is no deal in Argentina. China has imposed retaliatory tariffs on around $US110 billion of USA goods.

"We're going to be talking about lots of good things for Argentina, for the United States, including trade, including military purchases, and other things".

Asked if China was seeking to prevent the imposition of additional USA tariffs at the meeting, the ministry's spokesman, Gao Feng, said economic teams from both nations were in contact to implement a "consensus" reached by Trump and Xi during a phone call this month.

Additional data due out next week on trade of both goods and services is expected to show a 10-year high in the overall trade deficit, said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics.

"There is some anecdotal evidence that USA importers are likely pulling forward orders to get ahead of additional tariffs on Chinese goods, which could be one of the factors driving imports higher in recent months", said Pooja Sriram, an economist at Barclays.

BUENOS AIRES-The leaders of the world's biggest economies have gathered in Argentina for the 13th Group of Twenty (G-20) leaders summit.

Mr. Donald Trump will also meet Argentine President Mauricio Macri on Friday and is expected to participate in the signing of the new trade agreement between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, known as T-MEC.

Making matters look even more bleak for Chairman Xi and the Chinese delegation is the report that White House advisor and Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy, Peter Navarro, will be present for the state-level dinner and negotiations between Trump and Xi.

The trilateral, which would be an expansion of the bilateral meeting between Trump and Abe, is part of the series of meetings the USA president would have on the sidelines of the G-20 summit on November 30 and December 1. "I think the more likely surprise is they make more progress than what markets are expecting".

Mr Morrison will also begin with a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the $50 billion contract being negotiated with a French state-owned company to build Australia's newest submarine fleet.

Voice of America reporter Steve Herman said on Twitter: 'I was sitting in the press filing center here in Buenos Aires and we heard this rumble and saw the chandeliers sway slightly.

President Donald Trump apparently struggled to understand the English-language translation of his Argentine counterpart's Spanish words on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Buenos Aires.

"However, it should be feasible for some kind of agreement to be reached to prevent the dispute worsening if both sides are reasonable", it said.

For Trump, there was no escape from the lengthening shadow of the U.S. investigation over Russian meddling in his 2016 election, which is now reaching into his business affairs.
