Tackling climate change could save millions of lives, report says

The new report says that 2018 saw one of the highest levels of Carbon dioxide rise in the atmosphere in recent years. "At a time when we should be doing everything in our power to cut emissions, they're growing at a dramatic rate".

Overall, it means atmospheric Carbon dioxide concentrations are set to reach an average of 407ppm in 2018, which is 45 per cent above pre-industrial levels, prompting calls for urgent climate action from world leaders at the COP24 summit now taking place in Poland. The news marked the second year of increases after a relative lull from 2014 to 2016. "With this year's growth in emissions, it looks like the peak is not yet in sight".

India's carbon emissions are projected to rise as much as 6.3% in 2018, according to researchers at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom and the Global Carbon Project, an organisation that quantifies carbon emissions worldwide.

"According to IPCC (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change), to limit warming well below 2 degree Celsius, CO2 emissions should decline by about 20 per cent by 2030 and reach net zero around 2075; to limit warming below 1.5 degree Celsius, CO2 emissions should decline by 50 per cent by 2030 and reach net zero by around 2050..."

"It is not enough to support renewables", she warned.

The study, released by the Global Carbon Project, found that the widespread use of coal, as well as more cars and trucks being out on the streets.

Published in the journals Nature, Environmental Research Letters, and Earth Systems Science Data GCP, the study concludes that the increase in emissions has been largely driven by projected growth in major economies such as China, the USA, and India.

Last year, India's Carbon dioxide emissions had grown by 3.7 per cent, much lower than the average of about 6 per cent for the last 10 years, and this report had then said that it could have been partially attributable to demonetisation and GST.

Emissions are on the rise with coal use, including a 4.5 percent increase in coal in China and a 7.1 percent increase in India.

In the United States, coal continued to give way to cleaner natural gas.

The European Union is set to see a small decline in 2018, and will account for about a tenth of the total.

The report provides suggestions for the governments on how to deal with the climate change. These largely included European countries, as well as the likes of the United States and Uzbekistan. Though the report, released at Katowice in Poland on Thursday, notes the progress made by most of the countries on mitigation (emission reduction) front, the assessment clearly shows a wide gap in them fulfilling their $100 billion commitment by 2020. "We can't afford to delay action any further". "We have already achieved things that seemed unimaginable just a decade ago".

The U.N. chief chided countries, particularly those most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions, for failing to do enough to meet the goals of the Paris climate accord.

"While there has been positive progress on clean energy and electric vehicles, this is now too small to impact the onward march of fossil fuels".
