Broward County, Florida Sheriff Suspended Over Parkland Mass Shooting Response

VIA WIKIMEDIA COMMONS

Several responding Broward sheriff's deputies were either seen on camera or described as taking time to retrieve and put on ballistic vests as well as removing and replacing other equipment while shots were still being fired in the school, the report said.

Israel said he "wholeheartedly" rejected the governor's order and would fight it in court, arguing that DeSantis was making a "power grab" against the will of the county's people who elected him.

Governor Desantis announced Gregory Tony as the new Broward Sheriff.

DeSantis said Broward County sheriff Scott Israel showed leadership failures in the shooting that left 14 students and three adults dead at the hands of a lone gunman on 14 February 2018.

Israel expressed sympathy for the families but blasted DeSantis, a Republican, for carrying out what he considered to be a political hit job.

In December, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission, which is investigating the shooting, released its draft report.

DeSantis, sworn into office earlier this week, criticized the sheriff during his campaign and had signaled that he would likely remove Israel from office.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel refused to resign for almost a year but on Friday, he was suspended and replaced by former Coral Springs Police Department Lt. Gregory Tony.

"Now, there certainly were some shortcomings and there were some mistakes made", Kaplan said, adding that none of them "rise to the level to single out Sheriff Israel and hold him accountable for what happened".

"These incidents demonstrate Sheriff's Israel's repeated incompetence and neglect of duty", DeSantis wrote in his executive order.

The problem for Israel is that the investigation and commission he spoke about found that the department's active shooter training was ineffective, though they did not recommend suspending Israel.

Sheriff Israel inserted the word "may" in the BSO policy, and it is insufficient and fails to unequivocally convey the expectation that deputies are expected to immediately enter an active assailant scene where gunfire is active and to neutralize the threat.

Florida's governor on Friday, January 11, suspended the sheriff who oversaw the response to last year's Parkland school shooting over failings in his handling of the massacre.

After the scare, House Speaker Jose Oliva said he'll look to put money in the budget for a new state plane.

Commissioners also concluded that the department's active shooter training had not been effective.

"There was no wrongdoing on my part", Israel said shortly after the governor's announcement. DeSantis tweeted Friday that the suspension was over Israel's "repeated failures, incompetence and neglect of duty". Israel told them he didn't want deputies to think they had to conduct suicide missions.
