Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer look like ‘disappointed’ parents during Donald Trump rebuttal

A section of the reinforced US — Mexico border fence on the Otay Mesa area San Diego County as seen from Tijuana in Baja California state Mexico

U.S. President Donald Trump blamed unauthorized immigrants for killing Americans, taking their jobs and flooding his country with drugs as he doubled down on demands that Congress hand over US$5.7-billion for a wall on the border with Mexico in a nationally televised address.

Schumer said Trump "just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration".

Trump Jr. made his comment on Tuesday evening as his father addressed the nation, calling once again for funding a wall along the US' southern border. It is the second longest government shutdown in US history.

The impasse has left 800,000 federal employees without pay, and the partial shutdown that started December 22 is now approaching the longest on record. In past shutdowns, civil servants were paid retroactively once the impasses ended.

The meeting was a "total waste of time", he said on Twitter. "A very interesting experience!" Trump called the situation on the southern border as a "humanitarian crisis - a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul". "The president should be really defending why we are funding [ICE] at all", Ocasio-Cortez told liberal heavyweight Rachel Maddow.

Trump said he still may declare a national emergency to build the wall without congressional approval, adding, "My threshold will be if I can't make a deal with unreasonable people".

"I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier?" White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Trump would be traveling to the border to "meet with those on the frontlines of the national-security and humanitarian crisis". "American democracy doesn't work that way".

Media captionDemocratic leaders to Trump: "We don't govern by temper tantrum" How did Democrats respond?

"The women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge - a challenge that President Trump's own cruel and counterproductive policies have only deepened".

McConnell faces increasing pressure from within his party, especially from vulnerable Republicans up for re-election in 2020, as several conservative senators urged action to reopen the government. "This is a completely contrived and phony crisis as far as I am concerned because we solve problems like this everyday, working out and negotiating outcomes". Sanders, a political independent who caucuses with the Democrats, delivered an individual response of his own, separate from Schumer and Pelosi, as he has before on similar occasions, such as the State of the Union.

Also wrong were Trump's assertions that 90 percent of the heroin entering the USA crosses over from Mexico and that Mexico, indirectly, via a new trade agreement with the U.S. and Canada, would end up paying for a wall, the Times said.

This includes their efforts to fix the administration's abhorrent child separation policy, understand what led to almost two dozen immigrants dying in ICE detention since Trump took office, come up with a solution to the administration's ending of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and more.

This is the nonpartisan energy we need in 2019!
