Raiders hire Mike Mayock as general manager

Raiders QB Derek Carr's passing chart in Week 17

Now comes the hard part in terms of trying to turn this season's failures into success in the future, as both Gruden and Mayock will be counted on to continue to revamp the roster. Head coach/football czar Jon Gruden, owner Mark Davis and staff have spoken to several candidates about the position.

Mayock replaced the recently fired Reggie McKenzie and now gets his first chance in an National Football League front office at age 60. Mayock has plenty of college scouting experience, but he acknowledged he will need help in the day-to-day operations.

Mayock has drawn interest from teams with general manager openings in recent years, including the Washington Redskins before the 2017 season. "I've been in all 32 buildings for the last 15 years".

Gruden acknowledged that Mayock is in the running.

Jon Gruden: "Mike (Mayock) and I go back about 20 years to 1995 when I was with the Eagles".

"We've been friends and associates for a long time", Gruden said.

That's why it was news with former New York Giants GM Jerry Reese declined an interview request for the Raiders opening.

Mike Mayock, one of the most well-respected NFL Draft analysts in the industry, now has an NFL job.

Mayock sees some of that in Gruden, with how he challenges people.

For the Raiders, they finished with a 4-12 record in 2018 which landed them at the bottom of the AFC West.

"I know were going to argue about some guys, and I can't wait", Mayock said.

Oakland acquired those picks by dealing McKenzie's best two first-round picks from his seven-year tenure in Oakland. McKenzie was making the personnel decisions before Gruden was hired, and was easy to blame for the prior draft picks that Gruden didn't like.
