Ruthless display from Serena Williams in first round of Australian Open

Serena Williams advanced to the second round with a straight-sets win over Tatjana Maria

One hour and 59 minutes.

Serena Williams is in the midst of chasing Grand Slam No. 24 at the Australian Open, but she's still got her eye on the bigger picture-expanding the game.

The American dominated Bouchard's serve throughout, with her only hiccups coming on her own misfiring serve - particularly in a fascinating first set in which Bouchard broke Serena's serve twice bur failed to hold her own.

This is the first tour match Williams has participated in since losing to Naomi Osaka at the U.S. Open.

Williams will play Eugenie Bouchard in the second round.

She returned to the tour at Indian Wells previous year and had a roller-coaster season, forced to pull out of the French Open fourth round with a pectoral muscle injury and was later beaten by Angelique Kerber in the final at Wimbledon. It got me to a great position. But she's not alone.

"She reached two Grand Slam finals".

Two years ago, no one knew Serena Williams was carrying her child while winning her 23rd major to break a tie with Steffi Graf for the most in the half-century professional era.

"I didn't make too many unforced errors today", she said. That's the most important thing, because I have definitely had moments where I didn't enjoy it so much.

Two double faults from Bouchard in the opening game set the tone for a contest dominated by Williams. "Other athletes have done that surgery and come back to do their sport - I don't know how successfully or at what level they're playing at", Jamie Murray, 32, said. "I hope this match will prepare me for the rest of the tournament". Off it came, and her green jumpsuit and fishnet stockings were on display.

Asked if there was anything she admired about Serena, Bouchard replied: "If there is anything?"

Top-seed Simona Halep also advanced into the third round on the women's side.
