Saints vs. Rams NFC Championship game 2019

Defeat ends Johnston’s punt at Super Bowl glory

Despite the best attempts from the rest of the NFC, the collision course between the Saints and the Rams in Sunday's NFC Championship game seemed inevitable weeks before their Week 9 home-run derby in which New Orleans needed an offensive explosion to put away Los Angeles 45-35 in the Superdome.

The first and only playoff meeting between the two teams came in 2000, when the Aaron Brooks-led Saints upset the defending Super Bowl champion Rams in the Superdome.

"It's a great opportunity for us".

"I think it was all in good fun", Rams coach Sean McVay added.

Beat Davis and Anzalone on a few play-action throws and you soften that No. 2-ranked Saints run defense, which the Rams MUST do. The Rams this season are 11-0 when they rush for at least 135 yards and 3-3 when they don't.

New Orleans public officials were just as eager to play off of the mayor's joke, especially with so much bulletin board material to work with. And then also, you just try to figure out different ways and different styles, what makes the team best now - what makes New Orleans best now.

And if you're going to the game on Sunday, bring some earplugs. If the Saints crowd can cause even one big mistake for the Rams on an audible, or consistently bring slight disruptions to a strategic wrinkle the Rams like to do on offense, the fans have then affected the game for their team.

This season's AFC decider will be a rematch of a wild week-six game in Foxborough that the Patriots won 43-40 on a 28-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski as time expired.

The Eagles, however, immediately took control of the game with quarterback Nick Foles completing his first seven passes, passing for one touchdown and running in a second himself to take a 14-0 lead.
