Saudi teenager Rahaf al-Qunun lands in Canada after offer of asylum

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne will be meeting senior officials in Thailand

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, will board a Korean Air flight from Bangkok to Seoul on Friday night, immigration chief Surachate Hakpark said, before boarding a connecting flight to Canada.

Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, the 18-year-old woman who captured global attention after escaping from her family and barricading herself in a hotel room in Thailand, was granted asylum by Canada on Friday.

Her arrival at Toronto's Pearson International Airport capped off a tumultuous week for Alqunun that involved her barricading herself in a hotel room at Bangkok airport to avoid deportation back to Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi teen who fled alleged abuse by her family arrived in Canada Saturday.

Thai authorities backed down on an attempt to deport her after she arrived in Bangkok on a flight from Kuwait a week ago, turning her over to the US's refugee agency instead.

"International refugee law and overriding values of humanity have prevailed", said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi.

Trudeau brushed off a question as to whether Canada's move might make it harder to fix ties with Saudi Arabia.

She deleted her entire contentious Twitter account hours before departure for Canada.

A department spokesman said: "The UNHCR has referred Ms Rahaf Mohammed Al-Qunun to Australia for consideration for refugee resettlement".

Qunun's story has also put Saudi Arabia's male guardianship system, which restricts many aspects of women's lives, back under worldwide scrutiny.

Though her asylum case has moved at lightning speed the mystery over which country will accept Rahaf remains.

Surachate had told reporters earlier Friday that "two or three" countries were ready to offer her asylum.

After being denied entry by Thai immigration officials, Qunun then barricaded herself inside a hotel room, posting live updates on social media.

The campaign generated enough publicity that Thai officials allowed her to remain in the country under the protection of the UN. She said her father physically abused her and tried to force her into an arranged marriage.

Canada has previously angered Saudi Arabia after calling for the release of detained women's rights activists in the country - prompting Riyadh to expel Canada's ambassador and freeze all new trade. He said Qunun's father wanted his daughter back but respected her decision.

"He has 10 children". The Saudis also sold Canadian investments and ordered their citizens studying in Canada to leave.

No country, including the US, spoke out publicly in support of Canada in that spat with the Saudis.

"I understand that there have been death threats against her but I don't know the details", said Phil Robertson from Human Rights Watch, adding even threats from online trolls need to be taken seriously. She, too, used social media in a bid to reach Australia.

Alqunun temporarily disabled her Twitter account due to death threats, according to a friend.
