Top US officials visit Ankara amid tensions on Syria

Two British special forces soldiers seriously injured in missile attack by so-called Islamic State in Syria

During a visit to Israel, Bolton said American forces would stay in Syria until Daesh remnants were defeated and Ankara guaranteed the security of the Peoples' Protection Units (YPG), the Syrian-Kurdish militia that has spearheaded the US-allied Syrian Democratic Forces in the fight against Daesh.

Last month Trump made the unexpected decision to withdraw 2,000 US troops from Syria, sparking criticism from many allies and security aides, including his own Cabinet.

US President Donald Trump said in December that US troops had succeeded in their mission to defeat Islamic State militants and were no longer needed in the country.

Trump contended, however, that he did not say the withdrawal would happen immediately and that he is committed to a "slow and coordinated [U.S.] pullout" from Syria. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who is normally a close ally of the president, have said a quick withdrawal would be a mistake, in part because it could leave the region vulnerable to a possible ISIS resurgence.

"We're going to be discussing the president's decision to withdraw but to do so in a way that makes sure that ISIS is defeated and is not able to revive itself and become a threat again", Mr Bolton said. Most of the United States soldiers are there to train local forces fighting the hardcore-Islamist IS.

If the U.S. plans on making a withdrawal conditional on Turkish guarantees of safety for the YPG in Syria, one of two things will happen.

Trump has made clear that he would not allow Turkey to kill the Kurds, Bolton said.

"The State of Israel is dealing with all aspects connected to the establishment and management of infrastructure by foreign companies in Israel", Intelligence and Transportation Minister Israel Katz, who pioneered the project and is also a member of the security cabinet, said.

On Monday, Trump insisted his current policy is "no different from my original statements, we will be leaving at a proper pace while at the same time continuing to fight ISIS and doing all else that is prudent and necessary".

Bolton, who will travel to Turkey on Monday, said the USA will talk to Ankara to find out what its objectives and capabilities are.

He told reporters there was no timetable for a USA withdrawal from Syria but that there was not an unlimited commitment.

At a meeting on Tuesday in Brazil, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the Israeli premier that the Syria pullout would not affect US support and protection of Israel.

When he announced the withdrawal last month, a move that led to the resignation of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, among others, Trump said: "Our boys, our young women, our men, they're all coming back and they're coming back now".

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson said they "do not comment on special forces". Bolton said there was no fixed timetable and some U.S. troops would remain, at least in the south of the country.

British and U.S. special forces are working alongside Kurdish troops against IS in northern Syria.

And if Assad seeks to exploit United States withdrawal to recapture the area around Idlib, expect Turkey - which has declared this issue a red line - to intervene.

The soldiers also raided a Peugeot auto showroom in the city, and seized the recording of its surveillance cameras before withdrawing from the area.
