US Charges Huawei, Affiliates, CFO With Conspiracy, Stealing Trade Secrets

Nick Read

In a 13-count indictment filed in NY, the Justice Department said Huawei misled a global bank and US authorities about its relationship with the subsidiaries, SkycomTech and Huawei Device USA Inc, in order to conduct business in Iran.

"Huawei has misrepresented itself over the years", Whitaker said at a news conference that included US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, FBI director Christopher Wray.

The US contends that Meng, 46, a daughter of Huawei's founder, committed bank fraud to sidestep sanctions against doing business with Iran.

In addition, 10 USA federal charges were filed against two Huawei affiliates for stealing robot technology from T-Mobile.

Huawei has been the target of a broad US crackdown, including allegations it sold telecommunications equipment that could be used by China's Communist Party for spying.

The US Justice Department filed 13 charges against the tech firm, two of its subsidiaries and a senior executive on Tuesday, accusing it of misleading banks about the company's business and violating US sanctions.

The Huawei Technologies Co. logo is displayed at an event in Beijing last week.

The charges range from conspiracy to bank fraud, wire fraud, money laundering and obstruction of justice.

Meng is now in Vancouver, staying in one of her family's homes, as she awaits a decision from a Canadian court on whether she will be extradited to the United States.

News of the charges comes just as the White House is making plans for a team of high-level economic advisers to meet a delegation from China later this week to talk trade between the two countries.

Ms Meng was arrested in Canada last month on a USA request for allegedly evading sanctions on Iran. The company is also charged with conspiring to obstruct justice related to the investigation.

According to the indictment, Huawei relied on its global banking relationships to process U.S. -dollar transactions through the U.S. One bank cleared more than $100 million between 2010 and 2014, according to the indictment.

Huawei is the world's biggest supplier of network gear used by phone and internet companies and has always been seen as a front for spying by the Chinese military or security services.
