Maduro rejects ultimatum from European Union, urges Trump to stop intefering

UK recognises Juan Guaido as interim President of Venezuela

Multiple countries have recently recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido as the legitimate interim president after many refused to recognize Maduro's election in 2018, calling it illegitimate.

The Lima group wrapped its meeting today with a 17-point declaration that included a call for the "national armed forces of Venezuela to demonstrate their loyalty to the interim president in his constitutional functions as their commander in chief".

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was available to facilitate negotiations between the rival sides in Venezuela.

The embattled Maduro, whose years in power have seen Venezuela sink into an economic crisis that the United Nations estimates has led as many as three million Venezuelans to flee the country and brought on widespread food shortages, has refused to step down despite accusations that his country's most recent election was rigged.

Santos Silva, the Portuguese diplomat, said the Contact group wants to end Venezuela's political stalemate through the ballot box, preventing a civil war or an "illegitimate foreign intervention".

"I sent a letter to Pope Francis", Maduro told Italy's SkyTG24 television in an interview broadcast on Monday, with opposition leader Juan Guaido gaining more global support. "We are looking at what further steps we can take to ensure peace and democracy in Venezuela including through sanctions". In a statement, it accused them of submitting to a USA "strategy to overthrow the legitimate government" and singled out Spain for acting "cowardly".

"We know that the people of Venezuela are facing tremendous hardship and they need our help, as do the countries who have taken in those fleeing violence", Mr. Trudeau said.

Mogherini added it was not up to the European Union to recognise countries and their leaders, as it is a matter for European Union countries to decide whether they should diplomatically recognise a nation and its leaders.

The 35-year-old lawmaker, who is the head of the South American country's National Assembly, declared himself Venezuela's interim head of state last month, directly challenging Maduro's claim to the presidency.

Sanchez added he wanted to spearhead a plan of humanitarian aid for Venezuela in the European Union and United Nations.

But President Maduro shows no sign of budging.

Jon Snow is joined by the Labour MP Chris Williamson, who like Jeremy Corbyn, has supported the Chavez and Maduro governments in Venezuela.

On Monday, Maduro said he had written to Pope Francis, urging him to play a mediating role.

The Vatican didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on Maduro's appeal.

Trump said us military intervention was under consideration in an interview with CBS aired on Sunday.

"Any solution to the internal political crisis in Venezuela is possible only by Venezuelans themselves", the Kremlin spokesman stressed.

But David Lipton, the No. 2 at the International Monetary Fund, called Venezuela's economic crisis - marked by widespread food shortages, protracted hyperinflation and the loss of human capital through emigration - an "unprecedented economic storm" that will required generous, broad-based international support to overcome.

"Soldiers of the fatherland: We need the humanitarian aid to come, for your mother, your sister and all your family", Guaido said at a news conference at the National Assembly to thank the European governments for their support.
