Virginia Governor Ralph Northam apologies for ‘disgusting’ racist yearbook photos

Pressure is mounting on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to resign, with his state's House Democratic Caucus urging him to step down following revelations he appeared in a racist photo of a man in blackface next to another individual in a Ku Klux Klan outfit.

Northam is reportedly reaching out to his medical school colleagues, speculating that the photo may have been wrongly attributed to his yearbook page.

The yearbook images, taken from the governor's medical yearbook, were published again Friday afternoon by the conservative news outlet Big League Politics.

The Virginian-Pilot later obtained a copy from Eastern Virginia Medical School, which Mr Northam attended. The page shows a picture of a person in blackface and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood next to different pictures of the governor.

Northam, 59, released a statement and a video in which he admitted to appearing in the photo, although he did not say which costume he wore.

Calls for resignation came loud and clear from a number of 2020 presidential candidates, who said Northam's apology was insufficient. Sen.

In Saturday's press conference, Northam said he is not either of the people in the EVMS yearbook photo, and added that he did "darken his face" that same year, dressing as Michael Jackson for a dance competition. "While it's in very poor taste, I would think there is [probably] no one in the General Assembly who would like their college conduct examined".

Ms Harris said the "stain of racism should have no place in the halls of government".

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, speaks during a news conference outside of his home, Friday, Feb. 1, 2019, in Newark, N.J. Booker earlier in the day declared his bid for the presidency with a sweeping call to unite a deeply polarized nation around a "common goal. It is time for him to resign, so that Virginia can begin the process of healing".

Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat who served as Virginia governor before Northam, shared that belief. It is unclear which of the men pictured is Northam, then 25, who is in the middle of his first term as governor. "Governor Northam has lost all moral authority and should resign immediately, Justin Fairfax is the leader Virginia needs now".

That said, Holsworth said that Northam admitted that if he can not govern, he will have to revisit the issue.

Meanwhile, the state's Democratic Party has officially demanded that Northam resign.

Northam's page included his full name and other photos, alongside a quote from a Willie Nelson song.

He said that if a woman were to desire an abortion as she's going into labor, the baby would be delivered and then "resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue" between doctors and the mother.

"These pictures rip off the scabs of an excruciatingly painful history and are a piercing reminder of this nation's sins". Elaine Luria and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia; the NAACP and Planned Parenthood.

Republican state Senator Bryce Reeves said in a statement that Northam should resign if the reports of the photos are accurate.

Northam won a tight gubernatorial race in 2017 over Republican contender Ed Gillespie, who he accused of racism and bigotry for supporting Trump's immigration reform agenda. "All elected officials are held to the highest standards and this photo is beneath that of any elected office, and especially that of a governor".
