Actress Lori Loughlin surrenders as college admissions fallout spreads

Felicity Huffman, Lori Loughlin Among Dozens Charged In Nationwide College Admissions Scheme

The two are among 50 people charged for taking part in the largest such scam in US history, which steered students into elite universities including Yale, Georgetown and Stanford by cheating the admissions process.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Laura Eimiller told AFP that Loughlin, 54, surrendered to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents early Wednesday after returning from Vancouver, where she was filming, and she is set to be arraigned later in the afternoon on fraud-related charges.

Loughlin and her husband Mossimo Giannulli are accused of paying $500,000 in bribes and fabricating photos showing their daughter as a competitive crew rower, in order to get her admission to the University of Southern California (USC).

William "Rick" Singer, 58, pleaded guilty to a variety of charges for organizing the scheme, which investigators dubbed "Operation Varsity Blues". A source told ABC that Loughlin was in Canada filming a Hallmark Channel Original Movie.

Following her indictment on Tuesday, she was released on a $250,000 bond and was ordered to surrender her passport.

Court documents unsealed on March 12 allege the individuals participated in a nationwide conspiracy to facilitate cheating on college entrance exams and the admission of students to elite universities, including Yale and Stanford.

"Every year hundreds of thousands of hard-working, talented students strive for admission to elite schools", he said.

Others facing charges are the former women's soccer coach at Yale, the senior associate athletic director at the University of Southern California, the women's volleyball coach at Wake Forest University, and the sailing coach at Stanford.

The scam, said prosecutors, arranged for children to be recruited as athletes, regardless of their athletic abilities.

On Tuesday, Giannulli was arrested at the home he shares with Loughlin, but was released after paying his $1-million bond. Singer was paid $100,000 to $6.5 million by parents to engage in the scam, prosecutors said.

Lori Loughlin has wiped her social media clean. Huffman allegedly paid $15,000 for her oldest daughter and began the process for her second child but ultimately abandoned the plan because she was anxious a fixed score would "set off alarm bells".

Part of the scheme involved advising parents to lie to test administrators that their child had learning disabilities that allowed them extra exam time. Huffman was arrested earlier today on charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud, and Loughlin will be turning herself into authorities in Los Angeles later today.

According to CNN, Macy is not charged or named in court documents.
