Apple is launching subscription service for mobile and desktop games

Apple to launch a surprise subscription service on March 25

Apple is officially joining the ranks of the world's biggest streaming giants. Oprah cited that opportunity on Monday at the event.

But Bloomberg's report about Apple's pursuit of paid games for the platform - as opposed to those that pull in cash through in-app offerings - would appear to be one more way that Apple could boost its service offerings.

But location will not be a constraint to anybody seeking to watch the streaming of the Apple event. Apple has been on a launch spree last week.

Apple says it will curate the Apple Arcade games with customers having the freedom to try any game from its handpicked collection of titles that are all-you-can-play, have no ads, ad tracking or additional purchases, and respect user privacy.

Apple is also updating its Apple Pay service to add a virtual credit card, offered in partnership with Goldman Sachs and Mastercard. And finally, the Apple TV app will also soon be coming to smart TVs, including those from industry leaders like Samsung, LG, Sony, and Vizio, and will be available on Roku and Amazon FireTV.

Canadian users already access the free Apple News service via the News widget on their iPhones and iPads. The company did not say how much it will cost. This is in contrast to the sometimes-confusing alphabet soup people can see on their credit card statements. Here's what you need to know. A separate physical titanium card will be available too.

It will include a rewards program of 2 per cent back on all transactions.

The iPhone version includes a 2% cashback incentive on each purchase, has no late fees, annual fees or worldwide fees, said Apple Pay VP Jennifer Bailey.

Apple to launch a surprise subscription service on March 25

The biggest question will Apple TV+ be able to compete with Netflix, Hulu, the upcoming Disney+, and all the other streaming services that have been popping up or getting announced in recent years? The service will launch this fall in more than 150 countries and regions, though Apple didn't announce pricing.

Apple News is expanding into Canada with the Apple News app and a premium subscription model.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, speaks during an Apple special event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California, U.S., March 25, 2019.

Some of the games that are planned for the service are Enter the Construct, LEGO Brawls, Projection: First Light, Sonic Racing, and Beyond a Steel Sky, a sequel to the famous point-and-click adventure game Beneath a Steel Sky.

The company is pushing these new services as iPhone sales weaken.

As an avid gamer, I have downloaded hundreds of games onto my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV over the years. It has taken his successor, CEO Tim Cook, almost eight years to draw up the script that the company will now try to execute. It's a game that "shouldn't exist", Sakaguchi said in a video played during Apple's event. "Netflix has become the gold standard in how to create and distribute content, using all the data they have about their viewers".
