Boeing faces U.S. lawsuit in Chicago for 737 Max 8 crash in Ethiopia

Embattled aviation giant Boeing pledged on Wednesday to do all it can to prevent future crashes as it unveiled a fix to the flight software of its grounded 737 MAX aircraft.

Investigators looking into a Boeing 737 MAX crash in Ethiopia reached a preliminary conclusion that an anti-stall system was activated before the plane hit the ground.

Investigators into a deadly 737 MAX crash in Indonesia in October have also focussed on the new anti-stall system, called MCAS.

According to Reuters, a USA investigation group has analysed data from the "black boxes" of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, and a preliminary report will be issued next week. USA government air-safety experts have been analyzing details gathered from Ethiopian investigators for the past few days, according to one of the people.

According to Reuters, European Aviation and Space Agency documents from 2016 certified the plane as safe partly because training would "clearly explain" to pilots the "unusual" situations in which they would need use a manual wheel on the flight deck to adjust the angle.

Both crashes killed a combined 346 people and are being investigated by teams of global experts led by the countries where the flights originated.

According to preliminary findings by Indonesian investigators, in the Lion Air disaster in October, pilots encountered nearly the exact set of "unusual" circumstances described in the EASA document.

The MCAS, which lowers the aircraft's nose if it detects a stall or loss of airspeed, was developed specifically for the 737 MAX, which has heavier engines than its predecessor.

TUI said it was planning for the planes to remain grounded until at least the middle of July, costing it upwards of 200 million euros ($224 million) in core profit, with "considerable uncertainty" about when the 737 MAX would return to service.

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Boeing for the company's role in the fatal crash of Ethiopia Airlines Flight 302 earlier this month.

TUI said on Friday that with no dates yet announced by Boeing for modifications of the aircraft, nor for approval of those changes by US and European regulators, it was now planning for the grounding to last until mid-July.

Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed the morning of March 10 after taking off from Addis Ababa on its way to Nairobi, Kenya, killing all 157 people on board.

After the software update is approved, it would take about a day to deploy and an hour to upgrade each aircraft. And until those questions get fully answered, there's also this one: can the FAA certify that the fixes proposed by Boeing will really resolve the issue on the 737 Max?
