Brexit deal in chaos, May blindsided as speaker intervenes

Nathalie Loiseau France’s minister for European Affairs revealed that she named her cat Brexit because the animal is often indecisive a report said

Prime Minister Theresa May will ask the European Union to delay Brexit by at least three months after her plans for another vote on her twice-defeated divorce deal were thrown into crisis by a surprise intervention by the speaker of parliament.

Speaker of the House has told parliament that Theresa May can't bring her Brexit divorce deal back for another vote by MPs, unless there are actual changes to it.

His ruling, which came in an unexpected statement to the Commons on Monday, indicated that the Prime Minister can not bring her EU Withdrawal Agreement back before MPs unless it is substantially different from the package which was decisively defeated last week.

"This is my conclusion: if the government wishes to bring forward a new proposition that is neither the same, nor substantially the same as that disposed of by the house on the 12th of March, this would be entirely in order", Bercow said.

EU leaders will meet in Brussels at a European Council summit on Thursday to discuss the possibility of Britain delaying leaving the EU later than the scheduled date of March 29.

Some in the EU worry that Britain could extend until the end of June while eschewing the European elections and then revoke its leave notice, which it could do unilaterally by law, putting the status of the bloc's new parliament in doubt. He did not disclose how long a delay she would seek, but said she believed it should be as short as possible.

Brexit-backing ministers, including leader of the Commons, Andrea Leadsom, transport secretary, Chris Grayling, and worldwide trade secretary, Liam Fox, protested strongly about the idea of a long extension, and intend to lobby May again in the next 24 hours in a bid to quash the idea. May has warned opponents that a failure to approve her agreement would mean a long, and possibly indefinite, delay to Britain's departure from the EU.

Downing St. wouldn't say how long a delay she plans to ask for.

And former foreign secretary Boris Johnson called on the PM to postpone any further vote on her deal, warning it would be "absurd" to bring it back to the Commons without first securing change from Brussels. The problem for May is that negotiations have finished and time has nearly run out before the U.K.is due to leave the bloc on March 29.

"Overall, it seems like we will get a long extension or May's deal will pass soon".

Chief EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said the bloc wouldn't automatically grant the request.

An agreed delay - or other changes struck with the European Union - may be sufficient to hold a new vote in parliament next week, but it will be up to Bercow to decide what constitutes a "substantial change". Trying to bash people over the head with that deal won't convince them it's in the national interest and is no way to govern a country.

In October she controversially suggested that a no-deal Brexit would be better than Theresa May's Chequers proposals for the EU.

If in those circumstances May's deal was finally ratified, this would be pork barrel politics of epic proportions, the government's DUP tail wagging an entire nation into a Brexit destiny that even its little troop has always held in contempt.

Last week the Brexit deal was defeated by 149 votes, and in January, it was rejected by 230 votes in parliament. "This clearly increases the chance of a no deal Brexit but from a legal perspective, the extension can be granted right up until the deadline".

The EU is intensely frustrated with Britain's political paralysis, and say they will only grant an extension if United Kingdom politicians break their deadlock and decide what kind of Brexit they want.
