Daily cannabis and skunk users run higher psychosis risk

Daily Cannabis Use May Up Risk for Developing Psychotic Disorder

Armentano noted that rates of psychosis and mental illness have remained largely static over the decades, even though marijuana use has waxed and waned in popularity. However, she and her team estimate that out of five new psychosis cases, one may be related to daily marijuana use and one in 10 cases is due to high-potency weed.

Study leader Dr Marta Di Forti said the effect of skunk on mental health is so high that in cities where it is widely available it has a huge impact on numbers diagnosed with psychotic disorders. "For the primary time, now we have constant proof that there's a dose-dependent relationship between hashish use and induced psychosis at a inhabitants degree".

Once adjusted for other factors, the authors found that across the 11 sites, people who used cannabis on a daily basis were three times more likely to have a diagnosis of first episode psychosis, compared with people who had never used cannabis.

The spread of the most powerful form of the drug is taking its toll on mental health, and a push towards legalising marijuana must deal with this, researchers say. This elevated to five instances extra possible for everyday use of excessive efficiency hashish. High potency cannabis use was also more common among patients with first episode psychosis, compared to controls.

Smoking high-potency marijuana every day could increase the chances of developing psychosis by almost five times, according to the biggest-ever study to examine the impact of pot on psychotic disorder rates. Locally produced Dutch resin Nederhasj for example contains as high as 67 percent of THC.

Use of high-potency pot, with a THC level over 10 percent, was a strong predictor of psychotic disorder in both Amsterdam and London, researchers found. Additionally, 30 percent of new psychosis cases diagnosed in London were also associated with high strains of the drug.

[2] Sites included in the study: London (UK), Cambridge (UK), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Gouda and Voorhout (Netherlands), Paris (Val-de-Marne, France), Puy de Dôme (France), Madrid (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), Bologna (Italy), Palermo (Italy), Ribeirão Preto (Brazil).

"Therefore, it is of public health importance to acknowledge alongside the potential medicinal properties of some cannabis constituents the potential adverse effects that are associated with daily cannabis use, especially of high-potency varieties", the authors write.

In Amsterdam, the incidence of first-time psychosis would likely drop from 38 to 19 per 100,000 people per year, while in London, the number of cases would decline from 46 to 32 per 100,000 people.

Every day hashish use, particularly of the excessive efficiency strains, is linked to an elevated threat of growing psychosis, in line with new analysis launched Tuesday. The PAF assumes causality between daily/high potency cannabis use and first episode psychosis.
