Driven Google Duplex Will Make Reservations For You

The Google Assistant will call restaurants and salons to make reservations on your behalf. James Martin CNET

Google Assistant can control more than 10,000 smart devices for your home, and with a smart display you can control doorbell cameras, lights, smart appliances and more through a dashboard on the screen.

Just like with the smart speakers, the Assistant will continue to listen for a bit after you make a request - a small icon in the upper left corner denotes that its ears are still open.

The feature is only available to Pixel phone users right now, but will roll out to the iPhone and other Android devices in the "next few weeks", according to a blog post from Scott Huffman, vice president of engineering for Google Assistant. Similar to smart speakers, this is an optional feature that users can opt in and out of. The feature lets users engage in a conversation with the voice-activated assistant without prefacing each statement with "Hey Google". It essentially allows you to hold a conversation with the Assistant without having to constantly say "Hey Google". You can turn on this feature in the Google Assistant app by going to Settings → Preferences → Continued Conversation and hitting the toggle.

Google's reservation-making artificial intelligence system is coming to the iPhone and other devices, the firm announced on Wednesday.

Google Duplex is created to help people book a table at a restaurant without actually talking to anyone.

Play a game: Gather friends and family around your Smart Display and say, "Hey Google, Are you Feeling Lucky?"

Google first showed off Duplex last summer, before rolling it out to a small number of users in a handful of United States cities in October. Flip the switch for Continued Conversations and you should be good to go.

Share photos from Live Albums with Google Photos: Your Smart Display also can double as a digital photo frame.

Analysts believe that with Google's AI reservation system expanding to the majority of US states, consumers and enthusiasts alike will have a clearer understanding of how restaurant owners and users feel about a robot making restaurant reservations.
