How safe is Boeing's 737 Max 8 aircraft? | Inside Story

Boeing 737 Max grounding Aviation ministry to hold meeting at 4pm with airlines for contingency plan

Norwegian travel agent Berg-Hansen, dealing with cancellations of flights on Norwegian Air's 737 MAX planes, said clients were mainly concerned about whether their flights were still scheduled to fly and the need to rebook if so.

Two local boys examine a pile of twisted metal gathered by workers during the continuing recovery efforts at the crash site of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 on March 11, 2019 in Bishoftu, Ethiopia.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who chairs the subcommittee on aviation, said it's important that the US ground their MAX 8 planes like the rest of the world. Boeing, whose shares closed down 5.3 percent at $400.01 in the heaviest trading trade since July 2013.

"In addition to the basic trainings given for 737 aircraft types, an additional training was given for the Max version", Tewolde told state news reporters.

"The pilot was fighting against the computer software, which wanted to drop the nose of the aircraft" and "eventually there was a loss of control", said Garneau, a former astronaut.

So far, Southwest has the largest Max fleet with 34 aircraft, while American has 24.

South Korean budget carrier Eastar Jet said it will temporarily ground its two 737 MAX 8s from Wednesday to cooperate with the government's emergency safety inspections.

"Southwest Airlines is immediately complying with today's FAA requirement for all USA airlines to ground the Boeing 737 MAX 8", Southwest said in a statement. The 737 Max, which debuted in May 2017, is poised to generate about $30 billion in annual revenue as factory output rises to a 57-jet monthly pace this year, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.

Canada's transport minister also said he will not hesitate to act once the cause of the crash is known. Lebanon and Kosovo barred the Boeing 737 Max 8 from their airspace, and Norwegian Air Shuttles said it would seek compensation from Boeing after grounding its fleet. The biggest impact could be on future deliveries given Boeing has almost 5,000 more 737 MAXs on order.

Kebebew Legess said she was the mother of a young Ethiopian Airlines crew member among the dead.

Passengers were fretting too, with many seeking reassurances they would not be flying on a 737 MAX. Investigators will analyze information from the planes so-called black boxes in hopes of understanding what caused the accident.

Trump said the decision to ground the aircraft "didn't have to be made, but we thought it was the right decision".

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal suggested on Twitter that an upcoming hearing on the crash would focus on that conversation.

The company said it has 13 MAX aircraft in its fleet.

Anxiety was also evident among travellers, who rushed to find out from social media whether they were booked to fly on 737 MAX planes - the same model involved in the Lion Air crash off Indonesia that killed 189 people in October.

"In light of the decisions of regulatory agencies across the world to ground the Model 737 Max", Cruz said in a statement. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ryanair is due to take delivery of the first 737 MAX in April, two in May and two in June.

"We discussed the departure at length and I reviewed in my mind our automation setup and flight profile but can't think of any reason the aircraft would pitch nose down so aggressively", one pilot said.
