Juventus Sweat After Cristiano Ronaldo Forced Off With Dodgy Hamstring

Cristiano Ronaldo

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo suffered a minor thigh injury while on global duty but should not be at risk of missing next month's Champions League quarter-final meeting with Ajax.

Ronaldo was substituted on the half hour mark after a run down the left back, after which he pulled up and signaled to the bench that he could not continue.

It was only Ronaldo's second appearance for the national team since the World Cup last summer in Russian Federation.

"I'm not anxious, I know my body", Ronaldo told Portuguese media. "I'm calm, because I know I'm going to be back well in one or two weeks with no problem".

In the 31st minute, the 34-year-old Juventus forward suddenly stopped running and griped his thigh, with Portugal chasing the game after a Dusan Tadic penalty goal handed Serbia the lead.

Ronaldo's injury looked to have knocked the wind out of Portugal's sails, but the hosts drew level when Danilo picked out the top-right corner with an outstanding strike from 30 yards.

"I sincerely think we played well in the two games", he noted. It happens, it's football.

Serbia coach Mladen Krstajic played down the impact of Ronaldo's misfortune as he was quick to point out that his injury-hit side missed several key players. It has been eight months because I needed time for myself.

"It was very clear, the referee should have given it", said Ronaldo. I want to be in national team in the next matches. We created opportunities, played better - Serbia did not have great opportunities.

Ronaldo is due in action for Juventus when they take on Ajax in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on April 10.

But Portugal were controversially denied a penalty against Serbia despite the referee having pointed to the spot - with a chat with his assistant leading him to reverse the decision.
