Mike Krzyzewski: Zion Williamson ‘doubtful’ for Duke’s game at UNC

Zion Williamson Duke Blue Devils

The Duke freshman sensation has been ruled out of his team's ACC rivalry matchup against North Carolina on Saturday, the team announced.

Williamson was hurt in the opening minute of last month's loss to the Tar Heels, complete with the far-reaching freakish image of his left foot tearing through his shoe as he fell to the court. He's made himself a candidate to be national player of the year and the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, joining freshman teammate and ACC scoring leader RJ Barrett (23.3 points) to give the Blue Devils an unstoppable 1-2 punch.

Duke is calling Williamson "doubtful" for its regular season finale against North Carolina.

If the 6-foot-7 forward was available on Saturday, head coach Roy Williams and company would have to provide answers to that mismatch on both ends of the floor.

Krzyzewski said Friday that Williamson would have another workout later in the day without contact barring any setbacks following his activity Thursday. The Blue Devils got back into the game when the Demon Deacons missed 11 of their next 12 shots, many of them good looks.

Duke has largely been a mess since losing Zion Williamson to a knee injury on February 20. "For the most part, I thought we competed".

The status of Zion Williamson is unknown as I am writing this.

He's the most dominating player in America, and he changes the whole landscape of the game whenever he's playing.

This will be like the 2016 thriller in the Dean Dome when an already short-handed Duke team without Amile Jefferson went into the Chapel Hill, Matt Jones was injured in the first 10 minutes, and Grayson Allen, Brandon Ingram, and Luke Kennard led Duke to a one-point victory with a defensive stop in the final seconds from Derryck Thornton.

"Zion actually did some basketball stuff this afternoon", Krzyzewski said after the Wake Forest game, according to GoDuke.

Danielle Garvin led the Panthers (11-20) with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting. "You can't put together a well-oiled machine here in a couple practices to play in this conference at a level when you lose a kid like that".
