South Carolina's $1.5B lottery victor finally steps forward

Good Morning America

The unnamed person let another customer to go in front of them at a KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and ended up landing the jackpot in the US Mega Millions draw in October a year ago, NBC News reports.

In South Carolina, state lawmakers have appropriated more than US$5.4 billion in lottery proceeds for education since its inception there in 2002.

The lottery commission said the state will get $61 million in income taxes from the victor.

The victor told the lottery commission they let another customer buy a Mega Millions ticket before they did at the store last October, according to a press release. He or she will remain anonymous, a right afforded to the victor by state law.

"A simple act of kindness led to an awesome outcome", lottery officials said in a statement. You can say that again.

The South Carolina lottery says a single victor has stepped forward to claim the 1.5 billion U.S. dollars (£1.1 billion) Mega Millions jackpot from a draw last October.

"We are delighted that the victor is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize", Hogan Brown, the Commission's Executive Director, said in a statement.

The payout is the largest to a single victor in United States history, officials said.

"We are delighted that the victor is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize", Hogan Brown, executive director of the South Carolina Lottery Commission, said.

"We offer honest congratulations and are very happy that one of our SC retailers, KC Mart in Simpsonville, will receive $50,000 for selling the claimed winning ticket". The victor had until April 19 at 5 p.m.to come forward to claim the prize.

The anonymous victor isn't the only one walking away from this with millions.

Inside Edition went to Simpsonville, South Carolina, where the ticket was purchased, to ask around about the mysterious victor. A couple, Marvin and Mae Acosta, from California waited six months before claiming their share of the winnings. Taxpayers in the state may get a US$50 (NZ$73) rebate as a result of the win, the newspaper said. "Obviously, South Carolina will reap the benefits of that", House Ways and Means Chairman Murrell Smith, R-Sumter, told The Post and Courier. If it had gone unclaimed, the money would have gone back to the 44 states where the tickets were purchased.
