Tiger Holes Out From 82 Yards for Eagle at WGC-Match Play

"We've played tournaments together, battled each other down the stretch at events, but never in a match play situation, so this will be fun", Woods said of the upcoming match due to start at 9.30 a.m. eastern time Saturday. This event debuted in 1999 and will be played this year at the Austin Country Club, a course that seems to cater to the big hitters but does require some smart hitting as well due to the wind pickups. Woods would go on to win four out of the next seven holes, closing out the match on 17. He was tied for 128th, ahead of only two players.

They all were among 20 players - a group that includes defending champion Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson - who were mathematically eliminated Thursday.

Woods opened the Dell Technologies Match Play with a 3-and-1 victory over Aaron Wise on Wednesday that Woods conceded wasn't much to look at.

"I just hope I put up a better fight than I did in Atlanta past year", McIlroy, who got dusted in the Tour Championship by Woods last September, told Golf Channel.

Speaking about his eagle on the 13th, Woods added: "I thought I was going to need a three to halve the hole so I was trying to get it close enough to put a little bit of pressure on his chip shot and the next thing you know it goes in".

In the "Group of Death" where only one can advance, Australian 12th seed Jason Day blew a 3-up lead after eight holes and lost to U.S. 52nd seed Jim Furyk 2-up while Swedish 37th seed Henrik Stenson beat United States 20th seed Phil Mickelson 2&1.

"Nothing I've done these first three days is going to matter when we tee it up tomorrow", Stenson said. "Jim, I don't think he's given away an easy bogey since 1994 or something".

Tiger Woods remain 1 down to Brandt Snedeker thanks to a remarkable save. But it was just one win. "I've got to win and prepare to have to go back out".

Several groups are like that. The South Korean player was in the first group of the day of the first tee.

Thanks to his victory on Friday over Patrick Cantlay, which assured him a spot in the knockout stages this weekend, he now can count on four rounds and maybe more. Woods hasn't competed in Texas since 2005, and he hasn't been in the Match Play since 2013.

Sergio Garcia doesn't have a great history at this event, as he's struggled to finish inside the top-10 most years.

Woods, in his first tournament appearance in Austin, at least gave his gallery something to remember when he played a stunning 60-foot recovery shot left-handed from under a bush at the 10th hole. Snedeker saw it and played his third shot conservatively to about 4 feet. Then, he made a 7-foot birdie putt to take the lead.

Woods said he never paid attention to the other match until his was almost over because "I needed to take care of my own match".

Snedeker, a PGA Tour veteran with nine victories, has played with Woods in PGA Tour rounds 13 times in their careers but never bested him. "I bet you my kids were probably rooting for him late in the round".

The highest seed to lose was Justin Thomas at No. 5.

"Any key is to win this match today", he said.

With the Masters just two weeks away, Tiger is rounding into form. Watson needed to win the 18th against Kevin Na, but his second shot out of the bunker in front of the green came back down the slope and into his footprint. "Picked me up a little bit and made me dig a little deeper possibly".

Furyk wasn't planning to be in Texas this week. I feel comfortable with my game, I'm driving it as good as I ever have, I've tidied up my iron play and I've found something with the putter that feels really good.
