Valve launches Steam Link Anywhere beta

Valve extend Steam Link out of the home and networking API to all developers

Valve is launching Steam Link Anywhere, a new feature for its streaming app that allows users to connect to their computers and play games from anywhere, it announced on Thursday.

Regardless, to try the feature, enter your Steam settings and switch to the latest client beta build; anything dated March 13 or newer will work, according to Valve. Valve didn't provide specific network requirements but said you'll need "a high upload speed from your computer and strong network connection to your Steam Link device" in order to use it.

Before Valve killed it off at the end of past year, the Steam Link was the best way to stream your game library from your PC to your living room. A bigger one is that the service is now available exclusively on the dedicated Steam Link microconsole - a somewhat odd decision, given that the Steam Link was discontinued in November past year. For developers, the full Steam networking API and infrastructure (as used by CS:GO and Dota 2) is now free and open to all.

This streaming of games is one of the use cases for 5G. You could only stream games on your local home network, which sort of defeated the goal of having it on your smartphone.

The change here is that gamers can now stream their games anywhere there is an Internet connection, rather than being limited to playing on their local networks.

Valve is offering a new way for Steam users to stream their games from a home computer.

Part of this is better development tools, but more importantly, Valve are letting developers route network traffic through Steam's own infrastructure now.
