Why Did a Bunch of Republicans Vote Against a Bill Condemning Bigotry?

"It is very unsafe, very risky and I think we collectively as Americans on both sides, what Ilhan Omar is saying is very scary to me", she said. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota show "the Democrats have become an anti-Israel party" and an "anti-Jewish party".

Large portions of the resolution name-checked specific anti-Semitic tropes, including the dual-loyalty canard and allegations "that Jews control the United States Government or seek global, political, and financial domination and that Jews are obsessed with money".

Of course, Nancy Pelosi was appropriately, but unconvincingly, shocked by the comment, while at the same time defending and criticizing Ms. Omar as a bumbling fool for not being able to predict the hurt her remarks would cause other people.

The House passed the resolution in a 407-23 vote, with Democrats attempting to overcome a dispute that has overwhelmed their agenda and exposed fault lines that could shadow them through next year's elections.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., one of the resolution's lead sponsors, pushed back in an interview on MSNBC on Sunday afternoon. Under pressure from Pelosi and other party leaders, she apologized, but reaffirmed "the problematic role of lobbyists in our politics, whether it be AIPAC, the NRA or the fossil fuel industry". This has been a common excuse made by Democratic leaders: Omar must not have known what she was saying.

Around 60 Democrats boycotted the speech, saying it was an overreach by Speaker John Boehner, Netanyahu and Aipac - one also created to make it look as if Republicans were more pro-Israel than Democrats. "I find that to be problematic and I am not alone".

Rep. John Larson D-1st District, said the vote on the resolution was "common sense".

Omar has been the subject of verbal attacks and threats in recent weeks, including a sign posted in the West Virginia State Capitol that falsely linked her to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

"I think it's' important as a teaching tool", Larson said. However, criticizing Israel using anti-Semitic tropes is inappropriate and should be condemned.

Her co-host Sonny Hostin said that as a woman of color and a person whose grandfather was a Sephardic Jews, she had been subjected throughout the course of her life to loathsome prejudice, bigotry and discrimination.

He argued that if it was a Republican being accused of anti-Semitism, that lawmaker's name would be in the resolution and they would lose their seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The DHS was asked to accept evidence in Omar's case, require sworn testimony, search records and investigate "the highly suspect, evasive, ambiguous, apparently false and non-responsive statements and fraudulent alibis of Ilhan Omar". They're right - although calling for the destruction of the state of Israel or holding Israel to a double standard compared to other countries surely is. Instead, the focus had now also been drawn to the 23 GOP "no" votes.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Pelosi said she did not believe Omar had understood the "weight of her words".

The view, according to one of the aides, is that had all Republicans voted for the resolution, it would have stayed exclusively a Democratic issue.

For now, supporters of Israeli policy have some key advantages: Republicans in Congress are solidly in their camp, as are many Christian evangelicals, who make up a key part of President Donald Trump's political base.
