American Airlines cancels all Boeing MAX flights until new software is installed

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplane being built for Spain-based Air Europa rolls toward takeoff before a test flight Wednesday

The FAA is working with Boeing as it develops a software upgrade and proposes to increase the level of training that 737 Max pilots must receive.

Senior officials at American Airlines said they were "confident" that the Boeing upgrade would be approved by U.S. aviation regulators before 19 August, despite its decision to ground its fleet of 24 planes until then.

The plane's grounding has also threatened the US summer travel season, with some airlines removing the 737 from their schedules through August. Airline officials say by extending cancellations through the summer they can plan more reliably for the peak travel season.

Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority has published a preliminary report of the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 302 crash on April 4, 2019, deeming that angle of attack (AoA) sensor malfunction had a role in the tragedy.

So far airlines have said it is too soon to estimate the impact of the MAX grounding beyond the first quarter, but the extended cancellations signal that they do not expect a quick return of Boeing's fast-selling jetliner.

The U.S. was one of the last countries to ground the plane last month after a second deadly crash in Ethiopia, following by months a crash in Indonesia.

Southwest have had to cancel around 90 flights per day and reported in their financial filings a loss of $150 million in revenue.

"We're not denying that it's going to be a challenge for us", American spokesman Ross Feinstein said.

A decline in seat capacity could mean higher last-minute summer fares, particularly for business class travelers, aviation consultants and analysts said.

American Airlines owns 24 MAX jets and is awaiting delivery of 16 more this year.

American explained on its website that not all flights previously scheduled on a MAX would be cancelled, because the airline planned to use other aircraft for some flights.

"Once the Max is recertified, we anticipate bringing our Max aircraft back on line as spares to supplement our operation as needed during the summer", continued the carrier.
