British MPs urge government to extradite Julian Assange to Sweden

Julian Assange arrives at Westminster Magistrates Court in London after the Wiki Leaks founder was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police and taken into custody Thursday

"We will do everything we can to ensure that the prosecutors resume the Swedish preliminary investigation so that Assange can be extradited to Sweden and prosecuted for rape".

"We do not presume guilt, of course, but we believe due process should be followed and the complainant should see justice be done".

But within 60 days from Thursday, when British police bundled Assange out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London, US authorities must submit a formal request outlining all the legal charges Assange would face if he is transferred into US custody.

WikiLeaks co-founder Assange was arrested on Thursday in relation to an extradition request from the U.S., where he is facing computer hacking charges.

When he took up residence inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in 2012, it was to avoid answering the sexual allegations against him in Sweden, which had sought his extradition for questioning.

"A kneejerk response that presumes that hacking is acceptable if the perpetrators can claim that their motives were journalistic is particularly risky when it emanates from those aspiring to become prime minister or home secretary, such as Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott".

After Assange was arrested and dragged into a police van in the British capital, American officials unsealed an indictment against him for computer hacking as part of his WikiLeaks whistleblowing activities.

The show trial of Julian Assange on USA soil, when it comes to pass, may end up being the straw that stirs America's Mickey Finn as a legitimate republic.

Branco also noted that Assange has a young child in France.

The alleged victim's lawyer said she would do "everything we possibly can" to get the investigation reopened.

If Britain receives competing extradition applications, lawyers say the Home Secretary would have some leeway in deciding which takes priority.

A law change following the case of accused cyber-hacker Gary McKinnon, who has Asperger's, shifted responsibility away from ministers to the courts after then-home secretary Theresa May intervened to stop his extradition to the U.S. in 2012.

The allegations by two women have not been tested in court and Assange has denied wrongdoing.

Ecuador's interior minister, Maria Paula Romo, said a person with links to Assange had been arrested for allegedly conspiring against the country's government.

But she said Assange should face the criminal justice system if the Swedish government charged him.

Assange's lawyers meanwhile confirmed that U.S. prosecutors have 65 days to submit a full set of charges, raising the prospect of additional criminal allegations being introduced that would result in a far longer sentence.

"He's obviously going to fight extradition and fight it hard", Robinson told BBC radio on Friday, adding she had visited her client in a court cell after the hearing when he thanked supporters and said: "I told you so".
