College Senior Falls to Her Death From Fordham University

Sydney Monfries

A senior at Fordham University died on Sunday after falling from a clock tower on campus.

It is reportedly common for students at the university to climb the Keating Hall clock tower, touch the bell and take photos of the NY city skyline from outside one of its windows before they graduate. According to police, the 22 year old fell through an opening on the first landing tower. A student, named only as Dave, who met Sydney and her friends hours before the tragedy, said: "My roommate was with them".

"I heard they were just getting a better view of the city", a senior student told the news outlet.

A waiter at the restaurant where they had dinner beforehand told The New York Post that he did not know if they had been drinking.

She said that the university is investigating how the students were able to get into the building where the clock tower is, which she said was locked. She was pronounced dead in St. Barnabas Hospital on Sunday evening.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", Mr McShane wrote in his letter. Emergency responders arrived to find the woman, Sydney Monfries, lying on the floor of the Keating clock tower with trauma to her head and body.

"He told me some seniors [wanted to go] to the tower to take some pictures and have a good time before graduating".

According to USA Today, the tower, located in the Bronx, is off-limits to students and is locked at night. However, according to the Post, the president of Fordham confirmed her death. But there is no bell in the tower, the school said.

Monfries' bachelor's degree will be presented posthumously to her parents "at an appropriate time", the university said.

However, another student said they aren't sure. I'll never forget all of our memories back when you lived in NJ and I'll forever cherish them! The group had sent a Snapchat video from the top of the tower.

Our deepest condolences are with Monfries' family and friends during this incredibly hard and tragic time.

People began posting on her Facebook page on Sunday, mourning the loss and offering their condolences to her family, who flew in from Portland, Ore.
