Four Bees Found Living In Woman’s Eye, Surviving Off Her Tears

In the "world's first" operation, the doctors removed the bees, who were feeding off the moisture and salt of her tears, from He's tear ducts and that it could have been much worse if the woman had rubbed her eyes.

In quite the freaky scenario, a Taiwanese woman has discovered not one, but four sweat bees living underneath her eyelids.

"I saw something that looked like insect legs, so I pulled them out under a microscope slowly, and one at a time without damaging things inside", Hung Chi-ting, the head of the ophthalmology department at Taiwan's Fooyin University Hospital, told reporters at a news conference.

She initially thought that it was just dust and did not rub her eyes, choosing instead to rinse them with clean water.

A woman came to doctors complaining of pain in her swollen left eye.

The insects are known as "sweat bees", and are commonly found near fallen trees.

The woman was diagnosed with cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and severe corneal erosion caused by the tiny insects.

"These bees don't usually attack people but they like drinking sweat, hence their name", he said.

Reputedly non-aggressive, on the rare occasions their sting is used, the discomfort is said to be mild. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The woman had been visiting a relative's grave earlier that day. "I was squatting down and pulling out weeds", she told reporters. "I looked into the gap with a microscope and saw something black that looked like an insect leg".

They say it was a "world first". While mowing the grass around the tomb, there was a strong gust of wind and she felt some "foreign bodies enter my eyes".

Hung said that to his knowledge this was the first case of sweat bees becoming lodged in someone's eye in Taiwan. "They were still intact and all alive". Fortunately, Ho did not rub her eyes, as that might have prompted them to sting, causing her to suffer vast damage, including blindness, said Hung. "The bees will be fine", Shelomi said. "I don't expect we'll ever see it again".
