Jeff Bezos retains Amazon voting power after finalizing divorce

MacKenzie Bezos gains 4 percent of Amazon in divorce

Jeff Bezos also retains complete control of the Washington Post and Blue Origin.

"It takes the issue off the table, with less turbulence than you might have expected", said the investor, whose firm owns several million dollars' worth of Amazon shares.

The couple's announcement to split came just before The National Enquirer published a story saying Mr Bezos was having an affair with a former TV host.

Some investors had anxious about how the split could affect Jeff Bezos' influence over Amazon or the possibility he or MacKenzie would have to liquidate a large position ever since the world's richest couple announced the impending divorce in January.

The divorce ends a 25-year marriage that played a role in creating one of the world's most valuable companies.

MacKenzie Bezos and Jeff Bezos settled their divorce on Thursday.

The settlement means Jeff will continue to be the richest person in the world, with his total worth sitting at $110 (£84) billion, compared to Bill Gates' $99.5 (£76) billion, Forbes reports.

He will retain voting power over all of the Amazon voting shares the couple once owned together. Amazon shares were 0.2 per cent lower at 3pm in NY.

"I'm grateful for her support and for her kindness in this process and am very much looking forward to our new relationship as friends and co-parents", he continued.

They married in 1993 and a year later drove across the country to Seattle, where Jeff founded Amazon. MacKenzie Bezos would likely rank around number 24 on Bloomberg's list, making her the fourth-richest woman in the world.

But the following month, Mr Bezos claimed he was blackmailed by a United States tabloid over "intimate" photos of him. She added that she was grateful to be finished with the process and that the couple would remain friends.

MacKenzie Bezos's tweet appears to be the first one sent from her verified Twitter account, which says she joined the social media service in April 2019.
