Libya talks to go ahead despite new fighting: United Nations envoy

G7 foreign ministers warned eastern Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar to desist from his thrust on the capital Tripoli, menacing the internationally recognized government there, or face possible worldwide action.

Libyan rivals were making contradictory claims over territorial gains in the outskirts of Tripoli after eastern-based General Khalifa Haftar directed his forces to move on the capital.

The growing global pressure on Haftar came as fresh fighting flared Saturday south of Tripoli between the pro-government forces and Haftar's troops.

LNA spokesman Ahmad al-Mesmari said five fighters from his group had been killed in clashes over the past 24 hours, but insisted that it had made "an important step forward".

The head of Libya's United Nations -backed unity government, Fayez al-Sarraj, center, visits military and security commanders of the government forces who supervised recapture of the checkpoint 27 in Janzour, between Tripoli and the coastal town of Zawiya, April 5, 2019.

The UN Security Council on Friday called on Haftar to halt his advance on Tripoli, warning the military move was putting Libya's stability at risk.

Meanwhile, armed groups allied to the United Nations -backed Tripoli government moved more machine gun-mounted pickups from the coastal city of Misrata to Tripoli to defend it against Haftar's forces. "The situation is very worrying and we can not accept a further military escalation", Maas said after a ministerial meeting.

Guterres flew to the east of Libya on Friday but his efforts failed to convince Haftar to stop his military actions.

"The UN is committed to facilitating a political solution and, whatever happens, the UN is committed to supporting the Libyan people", Guterres said. It also urged all Libya forces "to de-escalate and halt military activity". - The militiamen retook the base after a "short exchange of fire", the source said April 5 on condition of anonymity.

The offensive by the LNA, which is allied to a parallel administration based in the eastern city of Benghazi, escalated a power struggle that has fractured the large, oil-producing country since the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.

The Libyan field marshal announced that "the time has come" to take Tripoli in an audio message on Thursday setting the scene for a showdown with the unity government led by Fayez al-Sarraj.

"We remain on alert here at the embassy and we're just waiting for calls from our kababayans (fellow Filipinos) so we can come and get them if they request to do so", Cato said.

Libya has been extremely unstable since NATO-backed forces deposed its former dictator Moammar Ghadafi in 2011.

Pictures posted on social media of men in military uniform sitting on the ground purported to show some of those taken prisoner, but their authenticity could not immediately be verified.

He added: "Haftar does not have money and arms enough to face Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous forces [the coalition formed to expel Daesh from the central city of Sirte in 2016] and the Libyan army together in the western area".

The Tripoli Protection Force, an alliance of pro-government militias in the capital, said its fighters had taken part in the recapture of the checkpoint 27 km to its south.
