Jackson-area marathoners P.J. Hoffman and Jordan Marchewka pose for

Cherono finished in a time of 2:07:57, while Desisa Benti crossed in 2:07:59.

The Boston Marathon, one of the most prestigious 26-mile races in the world, was once again run in awful conditions with rain, wind and low temperatures making fast times hard.

Ethiopian Worknesh Degefa, 28, eased to win the 123rd Boston Marathon women's race in two hours 23 minutes and 31 seconds, leading alone about 36 kilometers.

He came to Boston after competing in Saturday night's Cup Series Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, charging from 34th on the grid to finish 12th after pre-race inspection issues relegated he and a host of others to the rear of the field for the start.

A year after she withdrew from the Boston Marathon due to injury, Arroyo Grande native Jordan Hasay finished in third place at the marathon, according to a tweet from USA Track & Field.

In the men's race, the halfway point was passed in 64:28 and the lead group - led by Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui, Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu Hayle and USA's Scott Fauble - remained 11-strong at 20 miles, where the clock showed 1:38:37.

Cherono passed Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa in the final feet and won by two seconds.

The elite women's race was a different story.
