President Trump Arrives at US-Mexico Border in Southern California

Trump says he'll slap tariffs on Mexico if it doesn't stop flow of drugs and migrants

The action is part of the states' lawsuit challenging Trump's emergency declaration to fund a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border.

He acted after Congress approved less than he demanded for the wall project.

Before touring a just completed nine-metre-tall, 3.5 kilometre barrier at Calexico, Mr Trump said more military resources would be dispatched to the border. The California Democrat says money transfers to the wall have "undermined our democracy" and flout "the vote of the bipartisan Congress, the will of the American people and the letter of the Constitution".

But many Democrats, reluctant to concede to the president on his signature issue and determined to take a hard line in opposition, have persistently questioned whether it constitutes the "national emergency" that Trump has declared. More than half of those are families with children. Mexico is the third largest United States trading partner and any hold ups at the border crossings would have an immediate impact on trade.

"They haven't invested in a modern immigration agency", Seele said, before noting that the new government has prioritized doing so.

The comments come in the wake of an escalating immigration crisis, with data suggesting Customs and Border Protection is on track to apprehend nearly 1 million illegal immigrants at the border this year, and threats to close the southern border.

"If that doesn't work, which it will, I will close the Border".

"I don't think we'll ever have to close the border because the penalty of tariffs on cars coming into the United States from Mexico at 25% will be massive", Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. "They are going to have to live with it, they are going to have to live with it", Trump said Thursday.

Administration officials had been studying ways to minimize the economic impact of a potential border closure in case Trump went through with his threat, including keeping trucking lanes open or closing only certain ports.

Praising Mexico for moving recently against drug traffickers, Trump said, "If they continue that, everything will be fine".

The border wall is one of the long-standing promises that the US President had made during his 2016 presidential campaign. The furor over family separations last summer helped to highlight the fact that families won't be detained for long in the USA if they're detained at all.

Mr Trump claimed many of those attempting to enter the USA are gang members and compared some of their efforts to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

In the meantime, tensions between agencies and at the White House have been bubbling up. "But this will supersede USMCA".

Mike Vigil, a former chief of global operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said the amount of drugs smuggled into the United States annually was probably in the range of $50-$60 billion.

"I don't now know if the President is getting the information he needs about what powers he has", according to Rosemary Jenks, policy director at the Center for Immigration Studies.
