Tiger Woods seals fifth Masters title and 15th major

At 43, and two years after spinal fusion surgery, Woods captured his fifth Masters title and his 15th major with a one-shot victory on Sunday to trigger ecstatic scenes of joy around the 18th green.

Tiger Woods rallied to win the Masters for the fifth time Sunday, a comeback that goes well beyond the two-shot deficit he erased before a delirious audience at Augusta National that watched memories turn into reality.

"It's hard to really feel bad about how I played because I just witnessed history", said Xander Schauffele, one of three players who finished second. Prior to Sunday, Woods hadn't won a major championship since his victory at the USA open in 2008.

Tiger Woods insisted he never doubted his ability to end his long wait for a 15th major title, which arrived in stunning style as he claimed a one-shot win at The Masters.

This is a breaking news story. The Scotty Cameron Newport 2 GSS sold on GreenJacketAuctions.com for $88,809.60 a day before Woods won his 15th major at the Masters.

Nike has sponsored Woods since 1996 and has stuck with the golfer after his career ran aground amid a sex scandal, DUI arrest and multiple injuries. "I think the kids are starting to understand how much this game means to me, and some of the things I've done in the game". When I tapped the putt in - I don't know what I did.

"I'm just ecstatic for golf and I'm ecstatic for Tiger, " Johnson said.

Thought likely never to play the game professionally again Woods was in so much pain with his back that he himself once whispered to a fellow US Masters victor at the traditional Champions' Dinner that he was done, suggesting his playing days were over. In maybe his greatest feat yet, Tiger climbed the biggest mountain at a time and an age when most are hanging out at base camp.

I missed a couple of years of playing this great tournament. "I could barely walk".

Those were three of the main ingredients in Tiger Woods' remarkable Masters victory at Augusta. "To have the opportunity to come back like this, it's probably one of the biggest wins I've ever had for sure because of it". "I really couldn't do much of anything", Woods afterwards in his news conference.

Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, neighbors in south Florida who often play with Woods, expressed a mixture of excitement and trepidation. It was a win that didn't just tell the golfing world that Woods was healthy and able to compete, it was a victory that sent out a warning to every one of his fellow professionals that he's back in the business of winning major championships again.

"Luckily I've had the procedure where that's no longer the case and I can do this again. He played well, he hit the right shots at the right time and deserved to win".

"Having my family by my side today is something I will never forget".
