Top House Democrat steps up demand for Trump's tax returns

Illinois Senate to Trump: No tax return, no spot on ballot

House Ways and Means Chairman, Democrat Richard Neal, sets a new deadline for the IRS to turn over President Trump's tax returns.

In a two-page letter, Neal writes that he believes his committee is well within its rights to see the President's tax returns and that he expects a decision from the IRS within the next 10 days.

Neal, D-Mass., argues that a 1920-era law saying the IRS "shall furnish" any tax return requested by Congress "is unambiguous and raises no complicated legal issues" and that the Treasury Department's objections lack merit.

Ways and Means Chair Richard Neal sent the IRS a request for Trump tax information on April 3, citing a portion of the IRS Code giving certain committees authority to access "any return or return information". If the U.S. Treasury Department denies requests from Congress for the president's federal tax returns, they would at least have a chance of getting his state returns.

"The legal implications of this request could affect protections for all Americans against politically-motivated disclosures of personal tax information, regardless of which party is in power", Mnuchin wrote. "We have people working on it diligently".

The president has told those close to him that the attempt to get his returns amounted to an invasion of his privacy and was a further example of the Democratic-led "witch hunt" - which he has called special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation - meant to damage him.

He could not say whether the Treasury, which oversees the IRS, would complete its review of Neal's request by April 23.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Illinois is one of 18 states nationwide considering legislation on Trump's tax returns, which also includes New York, Colorado and Washington.

The Democrat chairman warned that failure to comply, would be interpreted as a "denial" of the request.

Trump appears prepared to fight this to the Supreme Court.

Neal has adopted a methodical approach to seeking Trump's returns.

Trump has said repeatedly throughout the 2016 presidential campaign and his presidency that he can't make public his tax returns because he is under audit.

In recent weeks, Trump has said that the American people elected him without seeing his taxes and would do it again.

Congressional Republicans have condemned Neal's request as a political fishing expedition by Democrats, while the White House has said the documents will "never" be turned over.
