Trump Admin Steps Up Threats to Shut Down Mexico Border

DHS sending 750 more agents to U.S.-Mexico border over 'influx'

If President Donald Trump does shut down the US-Mexico border as he threatened on Friday, economists predict the implications on goods and services could echo across the country.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at an event in Washington Tuesday, dismissed Trump's threat to shut down the border as "an applause line, not an idea". "We hope that that continues, and that we can work with them so we don't have to (close the border)".

Despite the logistical and economic concerns, White House aides have said this week that Trump is serious about closing the border even if the timing remains unclear.

Trump has also been told by some advisers that it would be extremely hard to operationally shut down the border but he has told them to move forward with looking at ways to achieve the feat.

"Democrats are leaving us absolutely no choice at this point", Mrs. Sanders said.

Automakers exported almost 2.6 million Mexican-made vehicles to the United States in 2018, accounting for 15 per cent of all vehicles sold in the country.

But Mr. Trump said he is willing to take the risk of deeper economic pain if it means stopping illegal immigration.

And Trump earlier this year declared the situation at the Mexico border to be a national emergency, a designation that he has said allows him to redirect taxpayer money to expedite the construction of a wall.

He added that although he agrees with Trump that there is a "border crisis", he would hope that the United States would not close the border.

The threat comes as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security says the capacity to hold migrants is being overwhelmed because of the large number coming to the border.

Wait times at the border crossing at Brownsville, Texas, reached 180 minutes Monday, twice the peak a year ago, officials said. The wiring harness example is interesting because she notes that eventually the part would be irrelevant, so there's no push to source the part in the U.S. Other parts involved ranging from engine components to anchors for seatbelt are built outside of the U.S. and plants have neither the space or the ability to stockpile those goods.

"We ended the day yesterday at Otay Mesa (California) with a backup of 150 trucks that hadn't been processed", the official said. "Now, if they don't, or if we don't make a deal with Congress, the border's going to be closed, 100%".

Because of limits on how long children are legally allowed to be held in detention, numerous families are released to await their USA immigration court hearings, a process that can take years because of ballooning backlogs.

Officials said facilities for handling the migrants - who for the moment can not be sent back after they cross the border and request asylum - are overtaxed and understaffed, creating hazardous conditions.

To try to address the problem, the Trump administration in January started sending some migrants to wait out their USA court dates in Mexican border cities. This has strained processing capacity of frontline border agencies, forcing numerous migrants to be housed in seriously horrid conditions, including makeshift camps constructed from barbed wire under a bridge.

The National Association of Manufacturers and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce said the solution is a broad bill that would combine security with amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants - and perhaps a new flow for guest workers.
