US Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigns amid growing border tensions

Kirstjen Nielsen out as Trump homeland security secretary

"I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!" he continued on another threaded tweet.

Nielsen was a close ally and confidante of Kelly, who left the administration at the end of 2018, marking a dramatic shift in the power dynamics of the West Wing, and there was continuing tension between Trump and Kelly over how the president treated her.

Kirstjen Nielsen, the secretary of Homeland Security who has become a face of President Donald Trump's hardline immigration push, is leaving the administration, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter Sunday afternoon.

Just a few days ago, President Trump withdrew his nomination of Ronald Vitiello to head up ICE, saying that he wants "go in a tougher direction".

Senior administration officials told CNN that Nielsen had a 5 p.m. meeting at the White House with Trump where she was planning to discuss with him the immigration and border issues and a path forward.

"To a select few in the media, Congress and the advocacy community, I'd like to start with a message for you: this department will no longer stand by and watch you attack law enforcement for enforcing the laws passed by Congress", Nielsen said in June 2018, defending the policy while speaking to the National Sheriffs' Association in New Orleans.

Recently, the President has spoken several times about the idea of shutting down the southern border entirely.

It was not the first time Ms Nielsen's supposed departure has been reported. Before that she was chief of staff to John Kelly during his term as DHS secretary.

The role didn't gain her popularity, but it helped her gain enough of Trump's trust to elevate her to the Cabinet post. She was heckled in restaurants as the policy came under criticism.

She had no intention of resigning, according to one of the sources, but rather was going there with an agenda.

Nielsen, 46, is among the longest-serving Cabinet heads in the Trump administration, and leads the federal government's third-biggest department, the Los Angeles Times reported last week in an article on how Nielsen had - for 15 months - "succeeded in holding onto her job, defying numerous reports that Trump had chose to fire her".
