US Military Detected India A-Sat Missile Test

NASA ISS astronauts lives 'at risk' due to Indian anti-satellite missile test

Debris from Indian anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons test conducted on 27 March would burn up in the atmosphere, Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan said Thursday, despite NASA administrator warning of the left-over debris.

DRDO Chief G Satheesh Reddy on Saturday held a press briefing on Mission Shakti Project and said that within 45 days, all the debris of India's anti-satellite ASAT test will decay. The NASA on Tuesday termed as a terrible thing India's shooting down of one of its satellites which have created about 400 pieces of orbital scraps, endangering ISS. "Some of the debris have already decayed".

Mission Shakti has ensured that it secures a place in the space power league. "It was intentionally done at 280 km altitude so that debris decay fast", Dr. Reddy said, adding that the interception was created to hit at an angle so that minimal debris go up and also have minimal velocity.

"An orbit of around 300 km was chosen for the test for capability demonstration. All necessary permissions were taken", Reddy added.

With 830 satellites, U.S. leads the world in the number of satellites, followed by China with 280 satellites.

These includes about 10,000 pieces of space debris, of which almost 3,000 were created by a Chinese anti-satellite test.

He also clarified that a test done on 12 February was not an ASAT test, but a ballistic missile that was used to take out an electronic target - in response to media reports that the 12 February test was also an ASAT test that failed.

India's ASAT test catapulted the country into an exclusive club of nations to acquire such a capability - the other countries being the US, Russia and China.

India said on Saturday it is looking to play a role in drafting global laws on different aspects of outer space as a major space faring nation with proven technology such as ground-based direct hit deterrence capability.

Asked if India has informed U.S. or other nations about the test, Saran admitted that India was "in touch" with other space powers. Statement by the USA state department is the U.S. official position.

On March 30, Chidambaram slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability, saying only a "foolish government" would make such a disclosure and "betray" a defence secret. "As part of our partnership with you, we will continue to work on issues using the NASA-ISRO Human Space Flight Working Group, Planetary Science Working Group, US India Earth Science Working Group and the Heliophysics Working Group", Bridenstine said.
