Why is WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in Ecuadorian embassy?

WikiLeaks: Assange to be kicked out of London embassy, arrested

WikiLeaks claims that, as a result of this leak, Ecuadorian officials have told Assange to pack his bags and that arrangements for his immediate arrest upon leaving the embassy have already been made.

A small group of protesters gathered outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on Thursday, where Mr Assange has sought refuge since 2012.

Earlier this week, Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno said Mr Assange had "repeatedly violated" the terms of his asylum in the Andean nation's embassy, his home for almost seven years.

Mr Moreno also suspected that Wikileaks was responsible for sharing private photos of him and his family on social media, and blames them for recent allegations of offshore corruption that appeared in local media outlets.

The WikiLeaks founder sought the protection of Ecuador in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he faced rape allegations, or the US, where he could be punished for publishing secret government documents. He has feared extradition to the USA since WikiLeaks published thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables.

WikiLeaks issued a statement to AP shortly after making the claim, asserting "If President Moreno wants to illegally terminate a refugee publisher's asylum to cover up an offshore corruption scandal, history will not be kind".

Police said in a statement there is an active warrant for Assange's arrest and that the police are "obliged to execute that warrant should he leave the embassy".

"Photos of my bedroom, what I eat and how my wife and daughters and friends dance [have circulated]" he said, The Guardian reported.

"It is not that he cannot speak freely, it is not that he cannot express himself freely, but he cannot lie, let alone hack into accounts or intercept private telephone calls" under the terms of his asylum agreement, Mr Moreno said.

The whistleblower has repeatedly suggested he might be apprehended outside the embassy and extradited to the United States.

His relations with his embassy hosts have been deteriorating for the past year, with Ecuador cutting off his internet in 2018.

Mr Assange has been living inside the embassy for nearly seven years. Swedish prosecutors have since dropped the charges against Assange but he failed in an attempt a year ago to have the United Kingdom arrest warrant against him dropped.
